Debt Management Service
A debt management service can guide you towards the right debt management program for your personal debt situation. But debt management programs are only as good as the debt management service providing them, so do your homework!
Finding a Good Debt Management Service
When you're trying to find information about a company, it seems like you hear about the bad stuff more than the good. That's a double-edged sword in the debt management industry though. The bad actions of a few companies can give the industry as a whole a bad reputation. But you shouldn't let a few bad apples spoil the bunch. Just like in any industry, there will be good debt management companies and bad ones. To safeguard yourself, you should fill out the forms on several debt management companies' websites. Within 24 hours, you'll get recommendations from these companies that you can compare. Also, make sure any debt management service you work with is certified by a national agency such as the National Institute for Financial Counseling Education. It doesn't hurt if they have the Better Business Bureau's seal of approval either. You should also be sure they have an actual street address instead of merely a post office box. If there's no street address, there's a good chance it's a fly-by-night operation.
You could also bypass all these steps and just visit the Department of Justice's website. Since Congress passed a law requiring anyone who files for bankruptcy to go through a debt management program first, they have added a list of approved debt management companies on their website. This should make it easy to compare one debt management service to another, then decide with debt management service is right for you.
